General Lettuce and Salad Greens Info

Lettuce and salad greens include hundreds of varieties such as iceberg, romaine, butter crunch, leaf, Bibb, escarole, etc. However, from a storage perspective, the spectrum has 2 distinct ends: head lettuces and loose leaf lettuces. Head lettuce has crisper leaves that grow tighter together; a firmer less perishable head is produced. In general leaf lettuce is more fragile with softer loosely packed leaves forming the head. We will give the storage information for head lettuce and leaf lettuce; for in-between types of lettuces you will need to decide where they fall on the spectrum.

Short Term Lettuce and Salad Greens Storage

Store a whole and unwashed head lettuce in a perforated plastic bag in the crisper section of the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days without losing quality.

Store unwashed leaf lettuce the same way as head lettuce, but its freshness quality will only last 2 to 5 days.

Leftover lettuce leaves that have been washed take more care; excess moisture causes lettuce to turn brown and soggy. A lettuce spinner can help with the drying process. After drying the leaves, layer the lettuce in a plastic bag by placing paper towels between rows of leaves. The paper toweling absorbs moisture and helps it stay crisp; it will keep about 2 days if stored correctly.
