looking for a good way to store root crops without a root cellar

The book Preserving Food without Freezing or Canning helped me out a lot.

They have several methods for storing root vegetables. One is to keep them in the basement in a container filled with sand, another is to cover them with newspapers. All in all it seems a cool, dark place will work well.
