We've had an issue in both our flower and vegetable gardens with rabbits coming by and taking the tops off of our plants or stripping them of leaves. Since my wife loves seeing the rabbits I have to walk the fine line of having them around while preventing them from ruining both of our gardens.
Some of the different deer repellent and rabbit repellent methods we've tried have been fencing in the gardens (too many gardens, just does not look nice), water scarecrows sprinklers
(work great for single areas, we have too many beds spread out everywhere in the yard), old wives tales (human hair, dog hair, beer, etc) but nothing worked that great for our situation. Other's we are hesitant to try because we have a small dog that chemicals might affect.
We recently decided to give Havahart Deer, Rabbit, and Squirrel Repellent
a shot, especially given it's very high reviews on Amazon and the fact that it doesn't contain any chemicals. So far it has been very effective and any plant we've sprayed it on has been spared the rabbit's teeth.
Havahart Deer Repellent
works by making the plants both smell and taste bad to deer, rabbits and squirrels. It contains putrescent eggs solids (sounds much more disgusting than it is), capsaicin
, and garlic. Those three substances work to keep the rabbits and deer off.
You simply spray the Havahart deer repellent on the leaves and stem of the plants you want to protect every few months and the rabbits, deer, and squirrels will leave them alone. This has been true even with all the rain we've been getting here in Connecticut, we haven't had to re-apply at all.
After trying so many different rabbit repellents
it's nice to have found one that is very effective and also so easy and quick to apply.
There's many different kinds of Havahart Deer and Rabbit repellent at Amazon, put we've used the spray bottle and it works great:
