Planting Fig

The most popular type of edible fig tree planted is the Common Fig Variety. Trees need at least 8 hours of full sun per day. Not recommended to start from seed; fig trees easily propagate by cuttings. In early spring take a leafless cutting 6 inches long and the width of a pencil. Put your cuttings into good quality potting soil in a pot that is lined with newspaper; water thoroughly and set in a warm, bright area. Cover the cuttings with an empty two liter plastic container with the bottom removed. Do not water the pot again until it is extremely dry.

In time you will see leaves and roots growing. After tree established, hardening off for 1 to 2 weeks, before planting in outdoors; fig tree also grows will in a movable container. Plant a young fig tree in the hole with the top of the root ball at ground level. Use rich soil with about 1/3 humus added. After replacing the soil, mound up additional soil to form a water basin. Water the tree thoroughly and then cover the area with mulch. Place trees at least 10 feet apart.

Growing Fig

Newly planted fig trees must be kept well watered until they have become completely established. After that they should only need to be watered in times of drought. Avoid over watering; it causes the fruit to split. Fertilize the tree every spring just before the new growth begins. To minimize their height, prune figs after they have gone dormant; remove only about 1/3 of the plant at a time. In the spring, prune off any winter-damaged limbs.

Harvesting and Storing Fig

Figs need to fully ripen on the tree before they are picked. A ripe fruit will be slightly soft and starting to bend at the neck. Harvest the fruit gently to avoid bruising. Fresh figs can only be stored 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator. Some fig varieties can be dried; it takes 4 to 5 days to dry in the sun and 10 to 12 hours in a dehydrator. Dried figs can be stored for 6 to 8 months.
