Planting Oregano

Prefers full sun and well drained average soil. You can start with a purchased plant or start seeds indoors then thin to the most fragrant smelling seedlings. After hardening off seedlings, transplant in garden soil after the last expected spring frost about 6 to 10 inches apart in rows 8 to 12 inches apart.

Growing Oregano

Control oregano's spread by cutting back flowering stems when their colors fade.

Harvesting and Storing Oregano

Oregano leaves are most flavorful before plants flower. Pick individual leaves as soon as the plant is large enough for your use. Store fresh oregano in plastic bags in the refrigerator. You can dry oregano by hanging cut stalks in a warm, airy location; store dried leaves in a sealed jar.
