Planting Purslane

Purslane thrives in full sun and humus rich soil with a pH of 6.8 to 7.0. Sow seeds directly in the garden 1/4 inch deep every 1 inch in the row; cover with an extremely thin layer of soil or compost. Keep soil moist until germination occurs. Thin plants to every 2 inches, then to every 4 inches, etc., until they are 10 to 12 inches apart.

Growing Purslane

Water plants with fish emulsion when plants are 4 to 5 weeks old. Purslane is an aggressive self-sowing plant; pinch off flower buds or keep plants cut back to prevent it from coming up next year in unwanted locations.

Harvesting and Storing Purslane

Harvest individual leaves and tip growth from individual plants as needed. Purslane doesn't store well even when refrigerated, so pick only as much as you need each time.

Purslane Insect and Disease Information

If weather is cool and damp, Purslane may be prone to various fungal diseases. If you live in a cool damp climate, increase the spacing between plants to aid air ventilation.

Purslane Yield Information

No yield information for Purslane.
